Description

The Wisconsin state flag shows the state coat of arms in the center against a background of dark blue. The state’s name is spotlighted across the top of the flag in white letters while the year, “1848,” centers on the bottom. Above the coat of arms appears a white ribbon with the state motto, "Forward," written. Right under the ribbon sits a badger, the state animal. The center of the shield bears the national motto, "E Pluribus Unum," which means "from many, one." The gold shield divides into four equal parts: a shovel and pick, a plow, an arm and hammer, and an anchor. On either side of the shield are a sailor and miner. Lying at their feet to the left are fruits and vegetables with a pyramid made up of 13 blocks on the right.

Meaning

The Wisconsin flag is rich with meaning. The sailor and miner represent those who work at sea and on land. The vegetables and fruits at their feet symbolize the prosperity and bounty of the state, while the pyramid represents the original 13 colonies of the Union. The four parts of the shield each represent an important industry for the state. The shovel and pick stand for mining, the plow is for agriculture, the hammer and arm represent manufacturing, and the anchor stands for seafaring.

History

This flag was originally designed in 1866 when Wisconsin troops wanted a flag for use on the battlefield. Over the years, the flag faced a bit of criticism; one state assemblyman thought the flag too costly because of its details, while others criticized adding the state’s name to the flag as it appeared too cluttered. In the 1970s, the flag was being sold with inconsistent designs; some had the state seal on them instead of the state's coat-of-arms. In 1979 the flag was modified to add “Wisconsin” and, “1848,” to show the year when the Union admitted the state.
